Faculty in NYU Langone’s Department of Microbiology train graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research associates in the molecular basis of disease and all aspects of microbiology, including the microbiome, the structural function of microbial components, infectious diseases, and host immune responses.

We also offer opportunities for undergraduates to participate in summer research as part of the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences’ Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Recent college graduates who are interested in conducting graduate-level microbiology research in our laboratories before applying to an advanced degree program may contact a faculty mentor to inquire about current training opportunities for research associates.

PhD Program

We prepare researchers for careers in the fields of microbiology and infectious disease and offer research guidance from experienced faculty mentors.

Researchers in our PhD program study microbiome biology; the mechanisms of microbial and parasitic pathogenicity; host resistance to infectious agents; the structural function of microbial components; the molecular, cellular, and immunological phenomena associated with microbial colonization and infection; and the genetics of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes.

Coursework emphasizes the molecular aspects of pathogenesis. Topics include bacteriology, virology, parasitology, cell and molecular biology, immunology, macromolecular mechanisms, and medical microbiology.

MD/PhD Program

We train graduate students to be leaders in academic medicine and biomedical research in a National Institutes of Health (NIH)–recognized Medical Scientist Training Program that merges the fundamentals of scientific inquiry with the insights and experience of clinical care.
